AI Engineer
We're looking for an AI engineer to own the quality of the language-model features in [product]. You'll build the evaluation sets that tell us whether features work, improve retrieval and tool use, and keep cost and speed under control — working closely with product and support.
What you'll do
- •Build and maintain evaluation sets for each model-backed feature, and run them before every release.
- •Improve retrieval, prompting and tool calling so answers are accurate and grounded in the right information.
- •Ship production code: tested, monitored, and resilient to slow or wrong model responses.
- •Track cost and latency per request and choose models and caching deliberately.
- •Explain what our AI features can and cannot do to product, support and customers.
- •Design guardrails against prompt injection, data leaks and harmful output.
What you need
- •You have shipped at least one feature built on a large language model to real users.
- •You can show how you measured whether that feature worked — an evaluation set, metrics, or a structured review.
- •You write production-quality [Python/TypeScript] code, with tests — this isn't a research or notebook-only role.
- •You can explain technical trade-offs clearly to people who aren't engineers.
Nice to have
- •Experience with retrieval systems (search, embeddings, re-ranking).
- •Experience with agents or multi-step tool calling.
- •Experience reducing model cost or latency in production.
- •Some awareness of AI-specific regulation, such as the EU AI Act, even if you're not the one who owns compliance.
How we use AI tools
- •Where company policy permits, use approved AI tools and verify their output — you're being hired to catch what they get wrong, not to trust them by default.
- •You'll recognise the cases where a rules-based approach beats a model call, and say so.
- •In the work sample, use whichever AI coding or research tools you'd normally reach for on a task like this — just tell us which ones and how you checked their output.
Pay
Salary range: [currency, minimum–maximum], plus [equity/bonus/benefits]. The range reflects [location/working pattern]. We place every offer within it using the same pre-set, job-related, gender-neutral factors — depth of shipped, measured LLM feature experience, scope of evaluation ownership, production software engineering experience, experience with retrieval or tool-calling systems — never previous salary or negotiating style.
