Questions
How much does a bad hire cost?
The US Department of Labor and SHRM put it at roughly 30–50% of first-year salary as a conservative floor; for mid-level and senior roles the all-in cost often reaches one to two times salary once lost productivity, team disruption and re-hiring are counted.
What is the four-fifths rule?
A fairness check: if a group's selection rate is below 80% (four-fifths) of the highest group's rate, the process may have adverse impact and warrants review. It comes from the 1978 Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures.
How do you calculate cost per hire?
Add your external recruiting costs (agency fees, job-board spend, referral bonuses) to your internal costs (recruiter time, tooling) for a period, then divide by the number of hires made in that period. A widely cited benchmark is roughly $4,000–5,000, but it varies a lot by role and seniority.
What is a good employee turnover rate?
It depends heavily on industry, but many organisations aim to keep voluntary turnover below about 10% a year. High turnover is frequently a downstream symptom of poor selection — assessing the right skills up front is one of the most effective ways to improve retention.
