Excel test

Almost every analyst, operations and finance job description asks for "strong Excel", yet a line on a CV tells you nothing about whether a candidate can actually build a working model, reconcile two messy exports or turn ten thousand rows into a decision. An Excel test replaces that guesswork with a hands-on work sample: candidates complete realistic spreadsheet tasks under the same conditions, and you compare them on what they can do rather than how confidently they describe themselves.

A good Excel assessment goes beyond trivia about ribbon menus. It puts a genuine dataset in front of the candidate and asks them to clean it, look values up across tables, summarise it with a pivot, and interpret what the numbers mean for the business. Because the tasks mirror day-one work, the results predict on-the-job performance and give every applicant the same fair, job-relevant chance to show their skill — regardless of where they learned Excel.

What it measures

Formulas and functions

Whether the candidate can construct correct formulas — arithmetic, IF and nested logic, SUMIFS and COUNTIFS, text functions like LEFT, TRIM and CONCAT, and date maths — and knows when to lock references with absolute and relative addressing.

Lookups and data joining

Combining data across tables with VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH or XLOOKUP, handling exact versus approximate matches, and dealing gracefully with missing keys and #N/A errors instead of letting them break a report.

Pivot tables and summarisation

Building pivot tables to aggregate, group and cross-tabulate data, adding calculated fields and filters, and reshaping a flat export into a clear summary that answers a specific business question.

Data cleaning and preparation

Spotting and fixing duplicates, inconsistent formatting, stray whitespace, mixed data types and text-stored numbers so a dataset is trustworthy before any analysis begins.

Interpretation and communication

Reading the output correctly — drawing the right conclusion from a chart, trend or summary table, sanity-checking totals, and explaining what the numbers imply rather than just producing them.

Efficiency and accuracy

Reaching the correct answer without brittle, error-prone workarounds, using structured references and consistent methods, and producing results that hold up when the underlying data changes.
